Route 66 Adventure Continues

Day 4 Part 1

Painted Desert

Dennis and I were up and eager to head out to see the Painted Desert and the Petrified Forest, but of all days for rain, that was what we were up against. Rain, drizzle, yuck. Yet off we went to see what we were so excited to see.

Loved the scenery on the way through New Mexico into Arizona.

Notice the Tee Pee's on the top of the cliff.

Love the colors in the rock on the cliff.

Finally we got to the Painted Desert. Yes, it rained some and drizzled but we loved the view. We loved it so much that we visited it again on the way home. I would love to come spend a day or so here and get some  pictures during different times of the day.

The Painted Desert encompasses over 93,500 acres and stretches over 160 miles. It begins about 30 miles north of Cameron, Arizona near the southeastern rim of the Grand Canyon to the Petrified Forest about 26 miles east of Holbrook, AZ. Along the way, it grazes the backyard of the Wupatki National Monument Indian Ruins.

The Painted Desert derives its name for the multitude of colors ranging from lavenders to shades of gray with vibrant colors of red, orange and pink. It is a long expanse of badland hills and buttes and although barren and austere, it is a beautiful landscape of a rainbow of colors. I loved taking pictures of the Painted Desert. Unfortunately I had to hand the camera off to Dennis quite a few times because I couldn't walk out to see some of the views. Not fun but it was doable.

Hope you have enjoyed the pictures and videos, we sure enjoyed taking them.

More pictures next time on the Petrified Forest side of the National Park.

Have an awesome day,
Charyl
